From 13 October 2026, the two-year gas and electrical safety check requirement applies to all rental agreements, including those commencing before that date; from 29 March 2023 all power outlets and lighting circuits in rental premises in Victoria must connect to both a switchboard-type circuit breaker and a switchboard-type residual current device. Consumer Affairs Victoria states that rental providers who entered into an agreement before 29 March 2021 are not legislated to conduct gas safety checks, so before 13 October 2026 the gas duty is not legislated for those older agreements; the claims do not settle whether electrical safety checks applied to those older agreements before that date.
